Small, incompletely-formed creatures that squirm and float about on the very threshold of the ethereal, Flidders are usually overlooked, ignored and considered to be of no real consequence. But those who have made a more in-depth study of the nature of the ethereal, the zones of expression, the emanatory spheres and such-like, the Flidder are both an enigma and a riddle that have led some scholars to obsession and worse.
Flidders are capable of sensing and perceiving events across a wide range of reality-spectra, including alternate time-lines, planes and whole ranges of categories so far unnamed, undefined and unexplored by experts or much of anyone else, for that matter.
These grotesque little blob-things congregate around Weak-Points, cluster near ruptures in the plenum and swarm towards the polyaxial perimeters of gates, portals and nexii. Perhaps they feed upon the energies released in these regions, possibly they simply prefer these sorts of environments, but no one really knows for certain. At least not yet.
Several old texts allege that Flidders have various sorcerous applications. One manuscript dating from the Mauve Interregnum purports to offer a strange rite that will bind a Flidder into a special form of automaton, but since a third of the work is lost or missing, no one is quite sure just how this is supposed to work, nor what the results might actually be.
More recent research has tentatively shown indications that Flidders can be bound into fresh, still-living bones and can be used to repair the effects of Shadow Theft spells, Gloomswallow attacks, and other forms of umbral maiming or tenebral dismemberment.
In fact, the more research is conducted, the more useful -- and hence valuable -- Flidders are becoming. As is any sort of actual knowledge regarding the things, their habitat, their behavior, their abilities. The vast majority of all known work with these creatures has been carried out in laboratories in Wermspittle...
Very inventive. I love the integration of the Flidder into the setting. It suggests adventure applications beyond strictly encounters.
ReplyDeleteThanks Trey! Encounters are just the beginning...
ReplyDeleteAnd it is always nice to have actual stuff that needs to be explored or studied by those inquisitive busy-body adventurers...
