According to Desbarleu, the Rattong are an 'achromatic' species of sorcerers who are implacably pitted against terrible immaterial things from beyond the bounds of space. It is Desbarleu's assertion that the Rattong are devoid of color because it has been devoured, or somehow drained from them in the course of their millenia-long war with these unnamed things. Whether they have abandoned those portions of the visible spectrum as some sort of defense against their foes, or whether they have lost the ability to inhabit those frequencies is unclear. Desbarleu was lost shortly before he could complete his work and few since him have been granted access to his remaining papers and notes since the disastrous siege of Karlogne.
The Rattong are mysterious, aloof and distant beings from a plane that has been drained of all color by an implacable foe that has no physical form, a horrific non-shadow that dissolves and digests all color it comes into contact with as it shimmers and slithers across one world after another.
The Rattong have spread outwards across the planes looking for weapons, spells, or allies that can help them defeat their ancestral enemy. To this end they will seek to parley and arrange for a swap of spells or weapons whenever they can do so. In most instances they will at least appear to deal in good faith, especially with obviously powerful entities, but the Rattong are impatient and moody, often going back on their word or seeking to renegotiate terms on a whim. They do not believe in contracts except for other people.
A typical Rattong will know any 6 of the following spells and can cast 6 spells in any given day.
Level 1: Detect Magic, Light, Magic Missile, Read Languages, Read Magic, Shield
Level 2: Continual Light, Detect Invisible, ESP, Invisibility, Mirror Image, Phantasmal Forces
Level 3: Dispel Magic, Invisibility 10' Radius
Level 4: Confusion, Hallucinatory Terrain
There are rumors of Rattong who have sought out great wizards and patriarchs with the intent to become their students. Usually this ends rather badly. Rattong have very little discipline, extremely short attention spans and are terrible students, despite being incredibly talented and natural-born sorcerers.

That's cool.
ReplyDelete@Simon Forster: Thanks. The Rattong are fun to play (as NPCs/monsters)and have gotten players into some really strange predicaments in the past...would you find it useful/interesting to have us provide some Adventure Seeds for each monster like the Rattong?
